The research (published in Italian), conducted by the Sustainability Lab in collaboration with BDO, analyzes the compliance of Italian companies with the reporting requirements in the first year of implementation of the European Taxonomy.
The European Taxonomy Regulation (EU Reg. 2020/852) introduces a common language to qualify economic activities as environmentally sustainable, in order to support the whole system of sustainable innovation promoted by the Green Deal and to increase the level of transparency for market participants. Specifically, the Regulation requires companies subject to Directive 2014/95/EU to include information in the Non-Financial Statement on how and to what extent their business is associated with environmentally sustainable economic activities.
The research presents a picture of the level of compliance with the regulation of 196 Italian financial and non-financial companies and an analysis of the taxonomic information reported. Specifically, for the financial and non-financial companies surveyed, several indicators were assessed, including a description of the analysis process conducted to identify eligible activities, the level of achievement of KPIs required by the regulation (e.g., CapEx, OpEx, and turnover for non-financial companies), a description of eligible activities carried out during 2021, and other qualitative information.
The results of the research highlight the difficulties of Italian companies in transposing a regulation of this magnitude, mainly due to the lack of detailed information and adequate reporting tools, and underscore the need for significant improvements and efforts, also in light of future developments in the Taxonomy Regulation.
